Lynoure - Frequently Asked Questions

Corsets

"Are your corsets made for tightlacing?"

The corset construction and material selection are based on the client's needs, so a client who wants a tighlacing corset will get one. All our corsets are made to be comfortable and durable. Reductionwise, the modern corsets are most often made with a 10cm waist reduction when the wearer has no experience of serious waist reduction. A larger reduction is used for experienced tightlacers and usually compressible people.

"What do the terms "fully boned" and "half boned" mean?"

The use of those terms varies somewhat. Some corset makers call a corset half boned if only some parts of it are boned and fully boned when all seams of the corset are boned. We on the other hand try to use the terminology in a historically accurate way, and that means that the terminology in the question applies mostly to 18th century corsets.
Fully boned corset has bones right next to each other, without an unboned area between. In half boned corset the bones are separed from each other with an unboned area, usually couple of times the width of the bones used. This kind of half boned corset can still easily have over 40 bones in total.

"What kind of boning do you use?"

The boning materials we use are artificial whalebone, steel spiral boning and springsteel boning (aka. white bones). We have couple of widths of each type and use the boning materials best suited for each corset. If you have special requests about boning materials, we also take those into account.

"Can you make a corset for a male?"

Yes, we can. We use roughly twenty measurements in our pattern drafting process, so we can make a corset that fits your body the way you want, be your goal a slim waist or a feminine figure.

"Where do you purchase the corset boning from?"

We do not disclose our suppliers to general public. However, if you are looking for corset boning to use in a corset or other boned garment you are planning to make for yourself, we can possibly sell you the amount of boning you need.

"How much do your custom corsets cost?"

The price of a corset varies according to the style and material, but the most inexpensive short light corsets cost about 120 €. If you are located outside EU, Finnish VAT (included in the prices) does not apply to you, so you'll get a 18% discount on everything, including the corsets!

"How many corset bones do your modern corsets have?"

Our modern corsets contain usually 16 to 24 bones. Our modern light corsets contain usually 10 to 14 bones.

"Can you make a corset to treat back pain?"

Those of our clients who have bought a corset to support their back have told that the corset reduced back pain significantly. However, we are not a manufacturer of orthoses (medical supports), so if you suffer from a serious back problem we recommend you ask your doctor for advice or turn to a company that makes custom back braces, e.g. Soleus Proteor.

Ordering custom garments

"I live far away. Can I still order a custom garment?"

Of course we would prefer to fit you in person, but if that's absolutely not a possibility there is another way. We can send you the measurement form so that you can measure yourself or ask a friend or a local dressmaker to do the measuring. We can then make the garment based on those measurements and mail the garment to you.
Although this method works well if the measurement are accurate, the benefit of personal fittings for tight fitting garments like corsets cannot be emphasized enough.

"I'm underage. Can I still order a custom garment?"

You can but we need the written approval of your guardian. That means the contract will require the signature and the contact information of your guardian in addition to your own signature and contact information.

"I know a girl who would make the same kind of costume for much less. Why should I use your company instead?"

In Finland the consumer protection laws only apply when dealing with businesses. If you get a private person to make your costume and the quality of work is less than satisfactory or your fabrics get ruined in the process, you are on your own. It's also possible that their cheap price is caused by the person evading the income tax.

"Can I pay custom work in installments?"

Yes, but we do require full price to be paid by the time you get your costume. That means you can either order your outfit one garment at a time or pay in multiple installments during the making of the costume. Normally, when no special payment arrangements are requested, we require 1/3 of the full price to be paid before the first fitting.

"I want the costume to be done by a certain date, can you make it in time?"

The answer to that depends on how far away the date is, what kind of costume you want and how busy we are at the time. Usually roughly 3 months before the date gives us ample time to make your costume but it's best if you contact us as soon as you start considering your costume and let us know about the due date. When you sign the contract about the costume, the time for its making will be reserved from our schedule. If the date is closer than three months away, it still makes sense to ask. Maybe we will have time to accept your order anyway.

For wedding dresses, reserving the time to discuss a custom gowns 4-6 months before the wedding is recommended. That way you will not have to worry about your dress on the last weeks and little surprises of life (like difficulties in finding nice shoes to go with the dress) cannot ruin the schedule.

"Some other companies deal with their clients over IRC. Why don't you?"

The confidentiality of the client information is very important to us. It's technically easy for people to pretend to be someone else than they are on IRCnet, so it might be hard for the client to make sure that the communication is confidental. Instead of IRC we use a live help system that doesn't require you to install any software on your computer.
If you have trouble accessing our live help, please check that your browser has JavaScript turned on. You can of course also contact us by other means, e.g. by email or phone.

Materials

"Do you make things out of leather?"

Yes, we also make things out of garment weight leather.

"Can you make garments out of fabrics I already have?"

Yes, most probably. First we will need to see your fabrics and design a style that works well with them.

"Do you have fabrics in stock that I can choose from?"

We do not keep a large stock of fabrics. However, we have a selection of fabrics suitable for historic costumes and corsets from which the client can choose if they wish. We also have swatches of fabrics we can easily order.

"At what point should I buy the fabrics for my custom garment?"

If you are planning to buy the fabrics yourself, it probably makes sense to wait until after the initial design meeting. At the design meeting we will advise you on what kind of fabrics are best for your garment and we can calculate you the amount of fabrics needed based on your measurements. The fabric amounts given prior to measuring are rough estimates given only so that you can budget for the fabric.

Custom patterns

"How much does a custom corset pattern cost?"

If you order a corset and want the pattern for it, there is only a small surcharge for that. However, we do not make custom corset patterns to be purchased on their own. The reason is it does not take that much inaccuracy in cutting and sewing to end up with a ill-fitting, even uncomfortable corset and the maker of that corset might then blame a perfectly good pattern for the faults of their sewing. Corset-like strapless tops are a separate matter and we do make custom patterns for those on order.
